David and I attended elementary school, middle, and high school together. He was always exceptionally talented with music. I have distinct memories of him ripping away on a snare drum while marching in parades down Main Street USA, soloing on the kit in jazz band, and performing in talent shows and marching bands. It’s been many decades since then and David has followed his Polaris star. He’s created soundtracks, performed in percussive ensembles, and written operas. His latest, Black Lodge is nominated for a Grammy Award! His determination and talent are admirable and his compositions are awesome.

Residency that piqued my artistic interest. i reached out to him requesting to create a portrait of his time there as i was mesmerized by the setting. Thankfully he agreed to share some great candid photos for me to work from. I chose this moment for the way it shows the glory of the interior space, contrasting against the winter scene outside, and how it shows him working at the piano.
